Snow Safety - Trip Planning

Written by Christine Allan | 11 August 2021

Jim Young is a NZ Mountain Guide Ski Guide, Avalanche Educator and Forecaster and member of the Aoraki Mt Cook Alpine Rescue Team.

He is also one of our Brand Ambassadors, and when we asked him to share some of his knowledge about safety in the back country, he leapt at the chance.

Part 1 of this 3-part series on Snow Safety looked at what gear and equipment Jim takes and why. If you missed it or want to refresh click here.

Part 2 is all about planning, where to find and how to interpret the information available to you. Planning is so important to snow safety we have broken it into two.

The first part,  2.1, is all about The "Where" and The Weather. Jim Young talks about how to interpret the weather when you're planning a trip. He covers off setting objectives for the trip and the key factors you need to consider.

In Part 2.2 Jim discusses how the weather plays into avalanche forecasts, where its safe to go, gear considerations, emergency planning and managing the group.

Part 3 is Out In the Field, where Jim applies the information they have looked at in Part 2 to their trip in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park.
